Can a Notary notarize a Certificate of Life and certify that a signer is alive? This request is sometimes presented when a signer needs to prove they are alive to collect their pension from their country of origin. ✅ If the document is simply the signer declaring they are alive, you may notarize their signature on their statement. 🚫 But if you, the Notary, are being asked to certify that the person is alive, you must refuse. Notaries are not authorized to certify that someone is alive. 👉 When in doubt, the signer may need to contact a consulate or get direction from the requesting agency before proceeding! #NotaryTips #NotaryLife #NotaryPublic

A signer hands you a handwritten will and asks if you can notarize it “real quick.” 🚩 That’s a serious red flag. In some states, notarizing a holographic (handwritten) will can actually invalidate it. Always proceed only with clear guidance from an attorney or authorized source. When wills are involved, slow down and verify. 🔎 Hotline Question: What’s the difference between an acknowledgment and a jurat? 📑 An acknowledgment verifies the signer’s identity and that they willingly signed the document, even if it was signed before meeting the Notary. ✍️ A jurat, on the other hand, requires the signer to swear (or affirm) that the document’s contents are true, and they must sign in the Notary’s presence. Both are important Notarial Acts we provide to serve the public! #NotaryTips #NotaryPublic #HotlineAnswer
