Alibaba has been exiting physical retail.
Selling off its departments stores and hypermarkets.
But ecommerce giant JD is full steam ahead in physical retail.
It has been building a huge offline footprint across China and now Europe.
Here are their current retail formats:
1: JD Mall and E-Space
Their first mega format. JD Mall is the newer version of the original JD E-Space.
These mega-malls range from 30,000 to 50,000 sqm.
Mostly centered on consumer electronics and home appliances.
2: JD Space (京东天地/ Tiandi)
This is a newer mega, urban lifestyle format.
It blends digital commerce, experiential shopping and lifestyle. About 33,000 sqm.
The first location is scheduled to open in September 2026 in Suqian (Liu Qiangdong’s hometown)
3: JD Appliance City Flagship Stores
These stores are one tier down from the mega-malls.
They act as regional anchors for household consumer tech and white goods.
They typically cover 10,000 sqm.
JD is rolling them out aggressively across major regional cities.
4: JD Auto Service
The automotive network has grown rapidly. It now numbers over 4,000 stores.
They offer vehicle maintenance, parts, and integrated O2O (online-to-offline) services.
5: JD Health and Pharmacy
The pharmacy network is massive.
It combines self-operated flagship pharmacies with a partner store network that connects over 150,000 locations nationwide.
6: JD Home
These are specialized experiential stores inside larger malls, focusing on home decor, smart devices, and lifestyle products.
7: Fresh Food and Grocery
7Fresh is JD's premium offline supermarket chain.
It features fresh groceries, dine-in food courts, and rapid 3-kilometer delivery fulfillment.
The network has expanded past the 400-store mark with the 7Fresh Kitchen sub-brand.
8: Ochama and Joybuy
These are JD’s evolving retail brands in the UK and Europe.
9: JD Home Appliance Shops
This asset-lite, franchise network includes 19,000 stores.
It is for China's lower-tier cities and county-level markets.
Over 130 of these locations have been upgraded to regional flagship status.
10: JD Electronics Stores
This network has 3,000 franchise locations. They specialize in mobile phones, laptops, and digital accessories.
11: JD Convenience Stores
The JD Bianli network transforms traditional mom-and-pop shops into more modernized convenience stores.
JD provides independent owners with digital SaaS management systems, smart inventory tracking, and direct supply chain access.
