Will the EU embrace the technology needed to improve food safety, sustainability and security?
After more than two years of political debate, scientific engagement, public campaigning, and behind-the-scenes advocacy, the European Parliament's ENVI Committee will vote tonight on proposed amendments to the New Genomic Techniques (NGT) legislation.
The outcome could determine whether Europe finally moves closer to unlocking the benefits of these technologies. NGTs have the potential to help farmers grow more resilient crops, reduce inputs such as pesticides and fertilisers, strengthen food security, and support a more sustainable agricultural system.
There are two possible outcomes.
If the committee rejects the amendments, the legislation can proceed to a final vote in the European Parliament this Wednesday, 17 June. That would bring Europe a major step closer to implementation after years of discussion.
If amendments are adopted, the file will return to further negotiations, creating more delays and uncertainty for farmers, researchers, breeders, and innovators across Europe.
At WePlanet, we've been part of this effort from the beginning. Together with scientists, farmers, policymakers, and supporters, we've worked to keep evidence-based agricultural innovation on the agenda. From open letters signed by Nobel laureates and leading researchers, to policy engagement, media work, events, and public campaigning, we've helped build support for a more science-based approach to agriculture.
Now the finish line is in sight.
Our petition has already been used in policy briefings and meetings with decision-makers. Every signature helps demonstrate that Europeans support innovation in agriculture.
