I mean, I'm big on #OperateWithRespect, but at the same time we have a responsibility to do no harm. Anti-depressants clearly reduce harm; smoking causes harm. I'm not going to call anyone names, but I think it's fair to state when I think someone is frankly wrong.

We already knew about the harms of surgeon fatigue, but this is important new information- *irregular* sleep in the previous month also causes harm.
It's not just the quantity of sleep, it's the regularity. Safe hours and sensible rosters protect patients.

Patients operated on by surgeons with social jet lag of ≥2 hours in the preceding month had a greater risk of major adverse events, independent of sleep duration or night shift frequency. Promoting regular sleep timing may improve patient safety. ja.ma/4o7bRMp

I really think the #OperateWithRespect program has worked really well in Australia.
Bad behaviour is not tolerated anymore in most hospitals.
Certainly where I work you simply can’t behave badly in the operating theatre.
And not in mine.

Goodness that’s not my experience.
No one I work with gives me any concerns.
My main surgeon @urethroplasty is a dedicated and kind surgeon but so are all my regulars.
Clearly problems with this group.

Coz we're the bossy bootses that lift other women. Not all women are like that, sadly. I was only last week fielding an #OperateWithRespect query about a department where one woman has undermined multiple junior women colleagues because she's a bit too fond of being 'the first'.

These revelations about an Epworth Hospital surgeon’s alleged malpractice against many women with chronic pelvic pain, over a long period of time, suggest a catastrophic failure of our health system.
Patients place their trust in our health professionals. They deserve best practice care and effective, conscientious oversight by hospitals, colleges, and the healthcare regulator, AHPRA.
My deepest sympathy goes to the brave women who have not received that care. The Epworth Hospital and AHPRA must be held to account for their apparent failure to keep these women safe.

This anon account, and apparent surgeon-to-be, is highly problematic. He has publicly criticized a colleague who is vulnerable due to power differential. He is disparaging about communication skills, devoid of compassion, ignorant of wellbeing. #OperateWithRespect. 🤨

This med student:
1. Doesn't show up on time (WAS ONE HOUR LATE TO ROUNDS, TWICE)
2. Doesn't see 2 patients when given ONE HOUR AND THIRTY MINUTES
3. Doesn't present coherently
4. Doesn't listen to basic instructions
5. Doesn't work on the list
6. Doesn't communicate when she will be gone, and just LEAVES the hospital mid day when given a task
7. Asks US to notify HER when a case is starting
8. Interrupts attendings and residents when they're talking. Frequently.
9. Literally asked her to scrub a case today and she said okay and didn't scrub it without telling anyone.
10. Is actually unteachable.
11. Started randomly eating a granola bar mid instruction for a task?????? hello????
I'm straight up wondering if I can kick her off the service. You want to be an anesthesiologist and can't even be bothered to show up on time or communicate????? At least TRY????

Sorry, rant over 🤣
But I really do feel quite strongly about avoidable harms in pursuit of #OperateWithRespect. We've been doing this for 9 years already, we should be taking less blunt and more nuanced approaches by now!
