Exciting to announce that the second edition of the PCGML textbook by Sam Snodgrass, Adam Summerville and myself is online! This version is a major update of the first, with a new chapter on GenAI and updates on the last two years of research. link.springer.com/book/10.10…

Working on the 2nd edition of our PCGML book, and I alone am adding over 500 lines to our bib file. A lot has happened in these last two years!

I can only speak for Genie, but this isn't true for us. We cited a bunch of PCGML papers with similar goals to our work, and then we cited more relevant methods like GameGAN and the world models series.

Thanks Matthew for pointing us to this paper. We are aware of the Game AI community and did cite the PCGML survey, but weren’t familiar with your work specifically using videos. We will make sure to cite and discuss it in the next arXiv version of Genie. Crucial difference is that we are not going via a symbolic game engine layer but, given a frame and action, generate the next frame directly—this allows us to train from real-world videos as well (see robotics results). x.com/_rockt/status/17620278…

Genie’s model is general and not constrained to 2D. We also train a Genie on robotics data (RT-1) without actions, and demonstrate that we can learn an action controllable simulator there too. We think this is a promising step towards general world models for AGI.

In case you missed it, I wrote up an AIIDE'23 thread. Highlights for me were the latter two keynotes from Gillian Smith (against human-centred AI) and Luke Dicken (industry veteran perspective on current AI scene), and a novel encoding by Matthew Stephenson for arbitrary 2D PCGML
Starting up a thread for #AIIDE23 posting. Maybe my last conference thread on this website? Regardless, excited to be at the 19th AIIDE!

I think about Scribblenauts frequently. It's actually a masterpiece of good old-fashioned knowledge engineering, with a massive ontology (saw a very good talk about it by @lizardengland a few years ago). Doing it with generative AI / PCGML would be interesting and challenging.

I teach expressive range and mixed-initiative co-creation in both my game AI undergrad and PCGML grad class and I teach AI-based Game Design patterns in the former as well! (Good luck with the promotion(?)!)

We’re excited for @SamPSnodgrass, an AI researcher at modl. He’s published his textbook with his coauthors @MatthewGuz @Autumnsburg. Congratulations! If you want to learn more about Procedural Content Generation via Machine Learning (PCGML). Get your copy: hubs.la/Q01w7FCB0

From subtweet to published book in ~2 years? That's not a bad turnaround. A PCGML textbook now exists! I had a great time writing this with @MatthewGuz and @Autumnsburg And I'm really hoping this book helps bring more people into the field! Link to book: link.springer.com/book/10.10…

I’ve had to explain to a few students recently that there isn’t a PCGML textbook because the topic only coalesced ~4 years ago. But if any academic publishers want to pay @Autumnsburg, @SamPSnodgrass, and I to write a textbook I certainly wouldn’t say no.

Looking forward to reading @MatthewGuz, @SamPSnodgrass, and @Autumnsburg new book on PCGML!
I was going to wait on this for the print copy, but before this site collapses further- @Autumnsburg, @SamPSnodgrass, and I wrote a textbook on Procedural Content Generation via Machine Learning! If you want ML for game content, this is the place. link.springer.com/book/10.10…

I've been working on a presentation on PCG and PCGML for some cool 11-year-olds today and I gotta say kids are my favorite demographic to make presentations for

Is anyone familiar with any work in explainable generative AI or explainable PCGML? I have a reading itch to scratch

I'm hoping the PCGML field fixes this eventually! Lots of cool ideas at the @AIIDEconference this week on this very topic! My research can be applied to PCG in games, but I tend to focus on evaluating robots/agents rather than making content fun.

Well, well, well. Look who got a title bump. I'll still be bringing PCGML to game devs, and exploring new ways that PCGML can impact game design, and improve bots and testing. Now with some seniority sprinkled in! Looking forward to growing alongside @modl_ai in my new role
