Until last year, there were no need to look for Core alternatives. And now there are several popular nodes implementations with Knots, like Umbrel, Permanode and Citadel.. It's a matter of time to see more nodes running Knots

IOTA's mainnet is public, but components can also be set up locally or in the cloud for private Tangle. The Chronicle is a permanode software for storing transactions efficiently, and the Wasp node will be for smart contract execution.
