Yes, BTC is permissionless — in that special modern sense where you don’t need to ask permission because you’ve already been told what to do. You can run your “own” node, provided it behaves exactly as dictated by the Core priesthood. You can “choose” your wallet, as long as it connects to their sanctioned APIs. You can “transact freely,” so long as the mempool gods approve your fee and the algorithmic hierarchy deems your transaction sufficiently profitable to notice.
It’s a marvellous kind of freedom — the sort that comes pre-packaged, shrink-wrapped, and labelled “open source,” though every significant change must pass through the same few hands. You can speak, of course, though the moment you say something they disapprove of, your commit access mysteriously evaporates, your name becomes a curse word, and the gates of GitHub clang shut.
This is what they call permissionless: not the absence of authority, but its perfect disguise. You are free to do anything you like, so long as it’s already approved. It’s a system designed to make you believe that obedience is autonomy, that submission is innovation. And the devotees call it liberty — because it’s easier to worship the word than to understand it.
