From Nigeria to the world stage! Dr. Samuel Ajayi just made history as a first-generation grad, earning his Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics at FSU. His groundbreaking research could transform cancer treatment and nuclear safety in Nigeria. Let’s celebrate this trailblazer!

I was asked during an interview in a podcast last week about my coming back to Nigeria
How does my nuclear physics research benefit Nigeria?
Hey, not bombs, but let me talk more about it as I prepare to walk down the aisle in a few days' time
You must have heard me talk about some of the benefits before
I study excited states of nuclei, and the research itself, with techniques used, has usefulness in radiation safety, nuclear forensics, radiotherapy, radiography, nuclear power generation, etc
If Nigeria can have working particle accelerators, for example, there is that possibility for the production of radioisotopes, which can be useful for treating cancer. I have spoken a couple of times to a top professor here who worked with her home country in Eurasia to develop a center for the production of radioisotopes for cancer screening and treatment.
I know there's a 1.7 MV tandem accelerator in OAU. I'm not sure what they currently use that for, or if it's working. I worked with a 9 MV tandem accelerator here at FSU, and we usually need to accelerate beam to a higher energy with an additional super conducting linear accelerator
My experience with gamma spectroscopy is very useful in forensics. We can identify potentially harmful materials that terror organizations may want to smuggle into the country. Think about Nigeria getting serious with dealing with boko haram and other terror groups killing our people
Then Nigeria may want to go forward in terms of nuclear energy. I strongly advocate for this. Yes, there's always a safety concern, which we've also been trained to deal with. Think about all the radiation issues around mining, oil drilling, and all these other activities, radiation safety and regulation are part of my thing
I will be walking down the aisle for my PhD hooding ceremony next Friday, and I want to make some awareness about what I do. As a first-generation college graduate, a father of 2, completely a PhD is first a big deal, then in Nuclear Physics? I'm super proud of the achievement
If you know journalists who cover good news such as this, please help me tag them. Tag multiple times, it's permitted. Please help retweet too, I will greatly appreciate
If we don't shout about our achievements in these days and times, no one will know what we have done and how unique we are
Back to Nigeria issue, of course, there will be a lot of challenges if you know how Nigeria operates. I can definitely work to support. But research costs money, and Nigeria must be willing to commit
Now, tag that journalist, please 🙏
