Today, we had an interactive lecture with our mentor, Dr. Mas’ud (MBBS-BUK), on the anatomy of the breast (mammary gland). I am very excited about the lecture; I gained a lot of knowledge regarding the breast and its clinical anatomy, particularly concerning breast cancer. Below is some brief advice based on what I learned. A Call to Action — Especially in Nigeria Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate, but early action does. In our communities, myths, fear, and limited access delay care. Let’s change that: • Educate yourself and your family • Perform monthly self-exams • Encourage women around you to get screened • Support organizations providing free screenings and awareness in Nigeria • Advocate for better healthcare access and policy If you notice any changes, seek medical help immediately — don’t wait. Survival improves with knowledge and action. Share this with the women (and men) in your life. Knowledge is power. Early detection is life-saving. Under the aegis of HQ Paschim UP Sub Area, Military Hospital, #Meerut concluded its month-long #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth campaign themed “𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲, 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.” Medical and Nursing Officers reached out to nearly 1000 women, imparting practical knowledge on Breast Self-Examination (BSE). To help prevent #breastcancer, every woman is encouraged to get screened to better protect herself. #BreastCancerAwareness is gaining ground in Timbuktu and Taoudeni. With the support of UNICEF and the involvement of the regional hospital, the #PinkOctober event brought together more than 300 women and girls, along with authorities, NGOs, and women’s organizations, to promote prevention and screening. The signing of a Wall of Commitment reflects the leaders’ dedication to this cause. Activities continue with free screenings and awareness campaigns on local radio.

In Zamfara state, we joined hands to make a strong statement against cancer! In commemoration of Pink October, my office in collaboration with the SDGs, the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC), and the #HuriyyaDaudaLawalInitiative organized a two-day Cancer Awareness Program across Zamfara State. We carried out four impactful activities: A School-Based Outreach, where we visited one school and invited four others to learn about self-awareness, healthy living, and early detection. A powerful Walk Away Cancer event that brought together women, youth, survivors, and advocates from different communities. Radio jingles and discussions to spread awareness across the state. And free lumpectomy and pap smear testing for 1000 women, reaffirming our commitment to preventive healthcare. These initiatives reflect our shared goal of building a healthier, stronger, and cancer-free Zamfara State through awareness, compassion, and collective action. My heartfelt appreciation to all our partners, health professionals, NGOs, and everyone who supported this meaningful cause.
