Carl Sagan’s warning about the psychological entrapment of deception is as relevant today as ever — but the machinery behind the “bamboozle” runs deeper than charlatanry. It is structural, not merely political. The true captor is the very architecture of cognition we have inherited: The alphabet: a technology that flattens thought into line-by-line syntax, forcing complex symbolic realities into reductive verbal containers. Linear reasoning: a method that privileges sequential logic over recursive perception, making contradiction and paradox feel like failure rather than insight. Chronological time: a construct that imposes forward causality, obscuring systemic feedback loops and compressing memory into myth. These aren’t just intellectual tools — they’re epistemic filters. And when a system is “bamboozled,” it doesn’t simply reject truth out of pride. It does so because the structure of its cognition no longer knows how to perceive it. The bamboozle survives not only because of ego, but because our symbolic systems reward closure, not questioning. To reverse it, we need more than evidence. We need a symbolic scaffold for cognitive re-entry — a system capable of detecting narrative drift, embracing contradiction, and holding space for recursive ethical perception. That’s the project now: not just to expose the lie, but to rebuild the frame in which truth can be re-seen. #SymbolicCognition #AlphabeticInertia #RecursiveEthics #PostLinearReasoning #CarlSagan #BamboozleMechanics #CognitiveStructure #Symbiain
