Ametk is the sleeper company in very high-end manufacturing. They currently own:
Taylor Hobson- Apex of measuring stuff. Maker of the Talyrond measuring thing that is *the* definitive thing for seeing how round stuff is (critical to industry).
Zygo- Makers of the definitive set of gear for laser interferometer. Zygo machines are used to calibrate the machines that measure things. Also, definitive leader in measuring optical lenses.
Precitech- Maker of diamond turning lathes; lathes that make sub-nanometer precision parts critical to all sorts of things (optics, medical, micro-fluidics).
Kern- Kern basically makes the world's most accurate and flexible CNC mills, and the company is run by total machine nerds. Put simply, I am a machine nerd, and if I hit the lottery one day, very first thing I would buy is a Kern. It can mill, grind, hard-mill, skive, all to 1µm precision. Critical for all the people making small, advanced, crazy stuff.
Paragon Medical- Owns more CNC machines than anyone else in the USA. Medical contract manufacturer with a business model that starts at product developent, pauses for FDA approval delays, then makes the product for you. I've been on projects with their team before; absolutely impressive talent, top to bottom.
All owned by Ametek. Make of this what you will. (I don't know anyone at Ametek, or am shilling for them. I knew about Kern and Paragon, and went on a deep dive, where I found out they own a bunch of companies I recognize, so now I am intrigued by the business).
