Some notable projects, protots & problem statements under StartUps for Railways initiative:
Rail stress & track health monitoring, broken-rail detection, automated track inspection, sensor-based load measurement, lightweight freight wagons, enhanced elastomeric pads, safety alert systems, rolling-stock design improvements, and onboard renewable-energy solutions.
Local mfg focused NG rail-tech & compenent policy in the works ๐ โ MoR extending 2022 StartUps-for-IR program: โน1.5โฏcr for R&D/proto, โน3โฏcr if trials succeed, with firms retaining IP.
Great news, but โน1.5C for critical h/w R&D proto when a lot of stuff needs to be shipped overseas, lacking domestic fab & other machining?
Nearly โน6,000 cr (~50% China) spent on importing locos, RS & components with ~โน50k cr avg/year budget for modernisation. Precision, highโload wheelsets & bogies, Traction motors & EMUs and signalling, comm electronics among key dependencies; followed by couplers, highโstrength fasteners, highโvoltage transformers, etc.
Thereโs meaningful localisation for VB components & new forged-wheel plants in Raebareli & Tita cutting China/Ukraine reliance. But with ongoing rail mod NG train tech evolution, India is playing catch-up & spend 10s of Bns in CapEx, with sizable importsand over ~$300 B in overall rail investment โ let's do better than โน1.5 cr to fix it.
