🚨 Important USCIS Update for IMGs and immigrant physicians On June 12, 2026, USCIS announced that a federal court order has vacated several USCIS “hold” policies. In simple words: some immigration applications had been placed on pause or delayed under policies connected to recent travel-ban and national-security proclamations. These policies affected applicants from certain countries and created uncertainty for many physicians, residents, fellows, healthcare workers, and families. The court’s order means those specific USCIS hold policies are now treated as not in effect. USCIS stated that the order is effective immediately and applies agency-wide. What does this mean? It means USCIS should no longer keep affected cases frozen under those specific policies. Applications should move forward through the regular immigration review process. This may include cases related to immigration benefits such as work authorization, green cards, adjustment of status, asylum-related applications, and other USCIS benefit requests, depending on the individual case. Important: this does not mean automatic approval. Applicants may still go through normal background checks, security screening, interviews, requests for evidence, or other legal review. It also does not necessarily end the presidential proclamations themselves, and further litigation may still happen. But this is a very important development for many applicants from affected countries. For IMGs, this matters because immigration delays are not just paperwork delays. They can affect residency, fellowship, hospital staffing, physician workforce planning, and patient care — especially in underserved communities where immigrant physicians play a critical role. At Project IMG, we will continue monitoring this closely and advocating for IMGs, immigrant physicians, and the patients and communities who depend on them. IMGs are essential to the U.S. healthcare system. Source: uscis.gov/newsroom/alerts/co…

Honored to have been featured earlier this year by the @acgme Rural and Underserved GME team in their “Pathways to Practice: Stories from Underserved in Medicine”, where I shared my journey from working in rural and underserved communities in Argentina to training in the South Bronx and East Brooklyn. That story was very meaningful to me because underserved medicine has shaped the way I see medicine, prevention, health equity, and the responsibility we have as physicians to serve where we are needed most. This week, I was grateful to meet with the @acgme Rural and Underserved GME team, including Laney McDougal, Director of Rural and Underserved GME, and Dr Lorenzo P., Senior Vice President, Osteopathic Accreditation, for a thoughtful one-hour conversation about the important work being done to strengthen graduate medical education in rural and underserved communities. We discussed the role of GME in improving access to care, supporting physician workforce development, and creating opportunities for physicians serving communities facing shortages. We also spoke about the important role that many international medical graduates play in rural and underserved areas across the United States. I was grateful for the opportunity to share more about @ProjectImg , our mission, and the work we are doing to support international medical graduates, residents, fellows, and physicians committed to serving patients and communities in need. Excited for what is ahead, including potential collaborations, webinars, podcasts, and educational initiatives focused on empowering physicians and strengthening care in underserved communities 💪🩵🤍 Here you can read my entire article in ACGME: acgme.org/newsroom/blog/2026…

It was an honor to meet Dr. Regina Benjamin, former U.S. Surgeon General. I have always been deeply inspired by physicians who serve at the national level and use their voices to advocate for communities across the country. Dr. Benjamin was incredibly kind and encouraging about the work we are doing through @ProjectImg . She shared her interest in staying updated on our initiatives, gave me her email and personal number! She even expressed interest in joining us at a future @TheIMGevent ! Moments like this remind me why we do this work: building bridges, creating opportunities, and bringing leaders together to support the next generation of physicians and the patients we serve. Grateful for the conversation and excited for what is ahead 🤩💪

It was an honor to spend time at the ACGME Headquarters and meet with several members of the @acgme leadership team and @ProjectImg , including: Dr. James Arrighi, President and CEO of @ACGMEI John Ogunkeye , Chief Financial and Administrative Officer ACGME Joyce Chang Price MHSA, Senior Director, ACGME Global Services Dr. Stuart Slavin, Vice President for Well-Being ACGME Shivani Mehta, Chief of Staff, Project IMG I had the privilege of meeting with Dr. Arrighi and Joyce Chang Price for more than an hour to update them on the work that we are doing in Project IMG , and discuss several important issues affecting graduate medical education in the United States and globally. We spoke about the challenges residents and fellows are facing, the ways ACGME is supporting learners at both the national and international levels, and potential areas for future collaboration with Project IMG. There are exciting conversations in progress, and we look forward to sharing more soon. On a personal note, Dr. Arrighi is inspiring for me, as he completed his cardiology fellowship at The National Institutes of Health @NIH, the same institution where I will soon begin my endocrinology fellowship. Seeing his remarkable career trajectory and current leadership as President and CEO of ACGME-I is truly motivating. It was also wonderful to reconnect with Dr. Stuart Slavin, with whom we have been working around the transition from applicant to resident and the well-being challenges that many trainees face during this process. The last time I got to meet with many of ACGME leadership was last year in Thailand during the World Federation for Medical Education conference, where I represented Project IMG as a delegate. Great things are in progress, and we are excited for what is ahead. Tomorrow, I will be back at the ACGME headquarters to meet with the Rural and Underserved Communities department, and I will also visit the ACCME headquarters to meet with Dr. Graham McMahon, President and CEO of Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), who has been a strong supporter of Project IMG and attended our most recent IMG event. Grateful for these conversations, the continued support, and the opportunity to keep building bridges for international medical graduates, residents, fellows, and physicians around the world. Great things coming soon. #ProjectIMG #ACGME #GraduateMedicalEducation #IMG
