Tell us you know fuck all about terminal ballistics without telling us you know fuck all about terminal ballistics. You're just parroting the wives tales that have pervaded the play army crowd since the Vietnam era. That bullshit has all been dispelled since then.
1. Bullets don't "tumble". A gyroscopically stabilized, conical projectile, when slows to the point that the center of pressure moves rearward of the center of gravity, it flips around, heavy end forward. It doesn't tumble end-over-end. This is called the shuttlecock effect.
This only applies to projectiles that retain their original conical shape. Expanding hunting bullets deform/mushroom within inches of contact and the center of pressure remains forward of the center of gravity. They tend to penetrate in a straight line and impart their energy more rapidly. They also present a larger surface (1.5-2xdiameter) causing a larger permanent wound channel and crushing force than a non-deforming projectile, which relies on the larger surface area of when it rotates off axis. The projectiles used by the armed forces are limited primarily to these two. OTM (Open Tip Match) bullets are a work around and are only issued to specialized units. OTM bullets are also inferior to expanding bullets, especially bonded core lead bullets and expanding monolithic copper bullets.
2. Fragmentation is not a desired result from a terminal performance standpoint. It's common with 55 grain FMJ bullets, but again, it's a disadvantage not an advantage.
3. These wives tales have persisted because the military is limited to the projectiles available for use due to treaties and conventions of war. Within the play army crowd it's monkey see monkey do. They all keep repeating their ignorance. Most of them don't know what they don't know and there are hundreds of different hunting bullets on the commercial market that are vastly superior to anything the military uses from a terminal performance standpoint.
4. I've studied internal, transitional, external and terminal ballistics for nearly 40 years. I've hunted big game for more than 50 years and have hunted on 4 continents. In addition to having killed dozens of big game animals with a variety of cartridges and bullets, I've killed and field dressed hundreds of hogs on eradication hunts.
5. In addition to decades of hunting experience, I've been an elite competitive shooter in several long range rifle disciplines. I've won several state championships and placed in the top 10 several times in the 1,000 yard National Championship. I've finished 4th for the season in the Precision Rife Series for the South East Division, Production Class.
