Education Directors & CHASS Commit to Advancing Religious Tolerance in Schools.
District and Municipal Directors of Education together with the Conference of Heads of Government Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) in the Greater Accra Region have pledged to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Religious Tolerance in Government Assisted and Private Mission Schools.
The commitment was made at a one-day sensitization workshop organized by
@PeaceCouncilGH in partnership with TUDEC Development Centre at Ashaley-Botwe, Accra. Held under the theme “Promoting Religious Tolerance in Schools,” the workshop aimed to deepen understanding of the MoU launched on September 4, 2025.
NPC Governing Board Member, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, urged Ghanaians to cherish the nation’s long-standing interfaith harmony, stressing that peace and development go hand in hand. He encouraged tolerance, respect for differences, and discipline among students, noting that discipline is the bridge between purpose and achievement.
Mr. Cafer Tepeli, President of TUDEC, highlighted the importance of peaceful coexistence in schools and called for stronger appreciation of diverse faiths and cultures.
Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Hajia Katumi Natogmah Attah, emphasized that religious tolerance is not merely about avoiding conflict but about creating safe, respectful learning environments where every learner feels valued regardless of religious background. She noted that the MoU represents a shared commitment between the Ghana Education Service and religious partners to promote tolerance while safeguarding the core mandate of education.
National President of the Conference of Directors of Education (CODE), Mr. Ibrahim Mumuni, reaffirmed the Directors’ commitment to implementing the document and urged stakeholders to adopt best practices and promote discipline in schools and society.
Mr. Vincent Esoah, Headmaster of Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School and Vice Chair of Greater Accra CHASS, also pledged support for implementing the guidelines to strengthen harmony in schools.
Participants called for continued collaboration and the adoption of best practices to promote tolerance, respect, and peace within school communities. The workshop brought together representatives from the Ghana Education Service, COMEU, chaplains, and head teachers from selected schools across the Greater Accra Region.
Together, we are shaping safe and inclusive learning environments that nurture respect, unity, and peaceful coexistence.
