Football and Prostate Cancer Awareness!
Football is used as a powerful platform to reach men across the UK and encourage them to check their risk of the most common cancer in men. Key initiatives include:
Prostate FC: This is the home of football at Prostate Cancer UK and unites professional clubs, managers, players, and fans to raise awareness and funds.
The "Man of Men" badge: Worn by managers and pundits on touchlines, this iconic badge is a visible symbol of support for the cause.
Prostate FFIT (Football Fans in Training): A free 12-week health and wellbeing program run at Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) clubs, specifically tailored for men undergoing or who have finished treatment for prostate cancer.
Walking Football: Charities encourage organizing walking football challenges and tournaments as a low-impact way to stay active, raise funds, and promote awareness.
Prostate United: An annual fundraising challenge in October where club staff and fans across the UK walk, run, or cycle daily to raise funds for life-saving research.
Club Partnerships: Many clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City, Luton Town, and Millwall, have official partnerships with prostate cancer charities, integrating awareness campaigns into their community programs and matchdays.
These initiatives highlight that one man dies every 45 minutes from prostate cancer in the UK—the duration of half a football match—emphasizing the urgent need for action and early detection. You can use the Prostate Cancer UK risk checker to find out your personal risk in just 30 seconds.
DYK: The initial test is done with your GP via a blood assessment? Not a physical examination. Only if something looks abnormal would you have the physical examination. So if like many you're put off by this test, like I was, then rest assured you need only have a simple blood test to clarify if the actual examination is required. I recently had the blood test and thankfully it was fine, but to catch this early if paramount.
