Grateful to Dr.
@KayodeOpeifa, MD/CEO of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, for spending the entire day with us during our courtesy visit, accompanied by SEDC Board member, Princess Adejoke Adebayo-Chukwumah. It was a meaningful introduction of the Commission, a tour of key NRC facilities, and a valuable opportunity to explore potential areas of collaboration.
We’re encouraged by the rehabilitation work set to commence soon, as well as the broader South East Rail Infrastructure Masterplan currently in development—a high priority project under Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. SEDC is eager to work closely with NRC, relevant MDAs, and state governments to support its successful implementation.
A key highlight of our discussions was the Rail Track Access Program—a forward-thinking model that enables MDAs and sub-nationals to leverage NRC’s right of way for economic infrastructure. Lagos provides a strong precedent with its metro rail system. The South East can and should adapt this model to unlock transformative opportunities.
We also discussed the troubling issue of rail infrastructure vandalism in the region. Tackling this will require sustained community sensitization and a renewed sense of public ownership.
We look forward to building a strong partnership with NRC and Dr. Opeifa’s team in the years ahead to unlock the full potential of rail-driven development in the South East.
