Now, The Lancet wants to suspend the Israeli Medical Association from the World Medical Association. Let's think about what that actually means.
The petition, published Saturday by the journal, was brought by organizations including the People's Health Movement and Doctors for Gaza. Their argument is that the IMA failed to speak out against what they call the genocide of Palestinians and the destruction of healthcare infrastructure in Gaza. The WMA will take up the question in Rotterdam this October.
Here's what the suspension would actually touch: PillCam, the technology that revolutionized gastrointestinal diagnosis. ReWalk, the robotic exoskeleton that lets paralyzed patients walk. AI diagnostic tools for cardiac imaging and cancer detection. All of it developed in Israel. All of it currently saving lives in London, São Paulo, Johannesburg, and New York.
Iranian-Jewish cardiologist Dr. Afshine Emrani said in his open letter to the journal: "Suspending the IMA doesn't punish a government. It severs research collaborations and training partnerships." He'd know something about medicine being used as a political weapon. He grew up under a regime that did exactly that.
The medical associations of Iran, Russia, and North Korea remain in good standing with the WMA. Iran's government has executed physicians. It imprisoned doctors for treating protesters after the 2022 uprising. It denied healthcare to political prisoners as deliberate policy. No petition. No Lancet article. No campaign. Russia has systematically attacked Ukrainian hospitals and medical infrastructure since 2022. Nothing. North Korea runs a healthcare system that functions as an instrument of state control, where access to treatment depends on your loyalty to the regime. Still nothing.
The IMA, by contrast, is one of the WMA's founding members and has been described by the organization itself as a strong advocate for WMA ethics. The WMA has already said it opposes suspending member associations for the actions of their governments, because doing so undermines the ability to maintain dialogue when it matters most.
The WMA was created in 1947 specifically in response to what happened when medicine stopped being neutral, when German physicians became instruments of a state committing atrocities. The lesson drawn was that medical ethics had to exist outside of politics. That doctors had to be able to operate across lines, not be expelled for crossing them the wrong way.
A journal that publishes a call to expel one democracy's medical association while the associations of authoritarian states committing documented atrocities keep their seats isn't making a principled stand. It's making a political one. And once you let political litmus tests determine who belongs in global medicine, you've broken the thing you were supposed to protect.
This isn't conscience. It's the Lancet cutting off its nose to spite its face and taking patients with it.

This is terrible! The lancet has completely lost the plot! It is pure antisemitism. Your right; Why no calls for Iran, china and other countries such as North Korea where hospitals are used as political structures of control?
The medical innovations and technologies from Israel are astonishing! I have seen what Rewalk has done for paralysed British people!
The Lancet used to be highly respected! How as a country have we allowed such wanton destruction of so many of our institutions …

Today, one of the world's most prestigious medical journals published a campaign to suspend the Israeli Medical Association from the World Medical Association — the body founded after WWII to ensure physicians would never again be weaponized by political ideology.
I'm a cardiologist. I'm an Iranian Jew who grew up under a regime where medicine was subjugated to the state.
What The Lancet just did is a disgrace to my profession.
