Lessons from this week:
Family,in our African identity, is not monolithic; its forms extend beyond biological ties to encompass those we choose. This reality is particularly significant for us as LGBTQ individuals who, facing potential rejection or exclusion within our traditional structures, we must forge our own definitions of family to find belonging. While biological lineage may trace our origins, it is often these chosen families – rooted in unconditional love, mutual respect, and shared experiences – that provide crucial foundation of where we truly belong. Far from being a departure from African values, these vibrant communities profoundly reflect core principles like strong communal bonds, collective responsibility, and the fundamental belief that no one should ever be left behind. The love found within our chosen families is powerful, healing, and authentically African, echoing the expansive kinship systems upheld by our ancestors long before colonial influences imposed narrower definitions of identity and belonging.
This underscores the immense power of community and celebrates the essential role and diverse nature of families in fostering identity and support.
