How shelling of critical infrastructure deepens the ecological crisis on the Dniester 🪖Military actions, Russian strikes on critical infrastructure, and the shelling of the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant have created risks for the river's water flow and biodiversity. In this report, I-VIN.INFO examines the threats of pollution and declining water levels in the Dniester, while also exploring possible solutions to prevent its drying and combat contamination📝 👨🏻‍💻Details: rubryka.com/en/article/dnies… 📍This material was prepared as part of the project "Strengthening regional environmental investigative journalism and expanding visibility through new partnerships", implemented by the NGOs Institute for a Successful City @rubryka / @RubrykaEng and Recovery Window, with the support of Journalismfund Europe @journalismfund. #Рубрика #Rubryka #ВікноВідновленняУкраїни #RecoveryWindow

Mass fish die-off and lost fisheries and spawning grounds: How Russia's war has affected Zaporizhzhia waters 🌊In the fall, residents of the left bank of Zaporizhzhia, a southeastern Ukrainian city on the Dnipro River, discovered dozens of dead fish floating in a local pond. A few months earlier, a similar scene was observed along the banks of two other bodies of water in the region. The air was thick with a sharp, unpleasant smell, and the surface was covered with the lifeless bodies of pike perch, common carp, bighead carp, and silver crucian carp. Fish kills in the wider Zaporizhzhia region are not a new phenomenon. Over the past five years, the area has documented nearly half a million dead fish. Yet, 76% of that total occurred in 2023 alone. SODA looked into how the full-scale war has affected the region's fish populations and fisheries📝 👨🏻‍💻Details: rubryka.com/en/article/war-i… 📍This material was prepared as part of the project "Strengthening regional environmental investigative journalism and expanding visibility through new partnerships", implemented by the NGOs Institute for a Successful City @rubryka / @RubrykaEng and Recovery Window, with the support of Journalismfund Europe @journalismfund #Рубрика #Rubryka #ВікноВідновленняУкраїни #RecoveryWindow

Youth are driving change in Bucha: What green initiatives are saving Ukraine's war-battered city ❤️‍🩹The world knows Bucha, Ukraine, as a symbol of tragedy — a place where Russian troops committed mass killings of civilians, destroyed homes, and looted entire neighborhoods. But today, despite all pain and devastation, Bucha stands for recovery and positive change. After the city was liberated, residents came together to rebuild what had been destroyed, take care of their environment, and make the city better: safer, cleaner, greener, and more modern. Young people have been central to this change — leading eco-initiatives, creating projects, and presenting them nationally and internationally. Through their efforts, Bucha is becoming a model of a city that, after the horrors of war, has chosen a path of sustainable growth and environmental awareness📝 👨🏻‍💻Details: rubryka.com/en/article/bucha… 📍This material was prepared as part of the project "Strengthening regional environmental investigative journalism and expanding visibility through new partnerships", implemented by the NGOs Institute for a Successful City @rubryka / @RubrykaEng and Recovery Window, with the support of Journalismfund Europe @journalismfund #Рубрика #Rubryka #ВікноВідновленняУкраїни, #RecoveryWindow @thebuchacity

Military burials in Ukraine and Europe: from plastic wreaths to protected memorial sites 🕯️You won’t hear a sound like this anywhere else. A thousand flags flutter in the wind, and steel ropes clang softly against metal flagpoles. Across seven thousand square meters, there’s no rustle of trees — instead, another sound fills the air: the faint friction of plastic leaves from artificial wreaths and flowers, mingling with the dry whisper of wilted, once-living blooms. This mournful symphony urges us to honor those who gave their lives for Ukraine — and at the same time, it makes us reflect on the future. In Kryvyi Rih, that reflection also includes thinking about the city’s environmental dimension📝 👨🏻‍💻Details: rubryka.com/en/article/milit… 📍This material was prepared as part of the project "Strengthening regional environmental investigative journalism and expanding visibility through new partnerships", implemented by the NGOs Institute for a Successful City @rubryka / @RubrykaEng and Recovery Window, with the support of Journalismfund Europe @journalismfund. #Рубрика #Rubryka #ВікноВідновленняУкраїни, #RecoveryWindow

A hot summer is not as scary as a dry winter: how war changes Kharkiv’s climate 📍At first glance, climate change and the challenges of post-war recovery may seem unrelated. Yet, the areas near the front line are especially vulnerable to climate impacts — and this summer proved it vividly. Prolonged heat waves have left plants without moisture, turning them bone dry; after shelling, this often leads to large-scale forest and steppe fires, while soils degrade. Such lands become the first candidates for desertification. How can communities adapt to extreme heat, and is it even possible, while still overcoming the consequences of war? Experts are looking for answers📝 👨🏻‍💻Details: rubryka.com/article/climate-… 📍This material was prepared as part of the project "Strengthening regional environmental investigative journalism and expanding visibility through new partnerships", implemented by the NGOs Institute for a Successful City ( @rubryka / @RubrykaEng and Recovery Window, with the support of Journalismfund Europe @journalismfund #Рубрика #Rubryka #ВікноВідновленняУкраїни, #RecoveryWindow @nakypiloua

Southern Bug under threat: what affects the state of the river from which Mykolaiv will drink water 🌊Yellow, foul-smelling water from the taps has long ceased to surprise residents of Mykolaiv. It’s impossible to cook with or drink, so people carry bottles to water distribution points every day — a routine as ordinary as taking out the trash or buying bread. Soon, changes are promised: the city plans to switch to a new water supply system drawing from the Southern Bug River. But this raises a key question — what exactly will flow through those new pipes? The river itself is facing serious challenges. The Southern Bug suffers from industrial and municipal pollution, the impact of numerous dams, and the drying of its tributaries due to climate change. All of these factors directly affect the quality of the water that Mykolaiv residents will receive📝 📝Details: rubryka.com/en/article/south… 📍This material was prepared as part of the project "Strengthening regional environmental investigative journalism and expanding visibility through new partnerships", implemented by the NGOs Institute for a Successful City @rubryka / @RubrykaEng and Recovery Window, with the support of Journalismfund Europe @journalismfund #Рубрика #Rubryka #ВікноВідновленняУкраїни, #RecoveryWindow

For the first time, independent media were part of the official conversation at #URC2025 Recovery Window, together with IMI, @UNESCO, and Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture, co-hosted a side event on why media are not optional — they are essential to recovery. 🟡 They rebuild trust. 🟡 They explain decisions & demand accountability. 🟡 They drive real change. While Russia invests $1.5B in disinformation, Ukrainian media keep working — under pressure, in crisis, but with purpose. That’s why we launched the Media Recovery Partnership Track — to unite those who believe media are critical to #Ukraine’s future. We’re not waiting for the window to open — #RecoveryWindow is building it.
