That was RKM Narendrapur in the late 1990s. Then the storm hit. Under the CPI(M)-led Left Front (in power 1977–2011), militant unions often backed or tolerated by the regime, launched what critics openly “Red Terror” (Lal Santras). Agitations turned ugly. Attempts were made to physically storm and seize control of the campus. The goal? Drag one of Bengal’s most autonomous, high-achieving institutions into the political-union ecosystem. This wasn’t random labour trouble. It was part of a decades-long, systematic campaign against RKM institutions that refused to bend. The legal battle that exposed the desperation: In 1980–81, the Ramakrishna Mission approached Calcutta High Court seeking recognition as a non-Hindu minority institution under Article 30(1) of the Constitution. Why? To safeguard its schools and colleges from exactly this kind of state-backed interference and forced political capture. The Calcutta High Court (single judge then Division Bench) agreed and granted the status in the mid-1980s. But the Left Front government and others appealed. On 2 July 1995, the Supreme Court (in Bramchari Sidheswar Bhai & Ors. vs. State of West Bengal) delivered its verdict: RKM is not a separate non-Hindu religion. It is a denomination within Hinduism. Minority status under Article 30 denied, though Article 26 protections as a religious body remained. Even after this crushing legal blow, the harassment did not stop. Into the late 1990s, union-backed pressure continued at Narendrapur, at the Seva Pratisthan hospital (forced to suspend services multiple times due to violent agitations), and across RKM units. The same playbook: steady, malicious interference since the Left Front took power in 1977. Most media stayed silent. But C.R. Irani, fearless Editor-in-Chief of The Statesman, refused to look away. In July 1999 (25–26 July), he published a searing two-part editorial: “Leave the Ramakrishna Mission Alone.” He laid bare the facts, the conspiracy, the assault on institutional autonomy. Letters flooded in. Bengal noticed. The Statesman kept hammering the issue edition after edition. RKM stood firm. The institutions survived. This was never just about one campus in Narendrapur. It was the Left Front’s larger war on any independent institution that wouldn’t toe the Red line - a chapter of Bengal’s history that history books often gloss over.
