A Nigerian biologist has rediscovered a bat species that was believed to have been extinct.
Iroro Tanshi, a 41-year-old 2026 Goldman Prize winner, rediscovered the short-tailed roundleaf bat during a field expedition at Cross River National Park and the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary in Nigeria in 2016, according to the prize's website.
“We were trapping near a roost that night, so we caught a lot of bats,” Tanshi recalled to The Guardian in an interview published on Thursday, June 16 about the find, adding that at least one of the bats “looked very, very different. Big-eared.”
Due to the discovery, she decided to set up harp traps and mist nets later that year to see if she would be able to trap a few more of the odd-looking bats, and her team ended up capturing 15 more of the animals.
“That was the moment that changed everything,” Tanshi told the outlet of her breakthrough. “Actually, there was the catching and the moment of realization, like, ‘Oh my gosh.' ”
