Moving to the United States🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 is exciting… but there are some things nobody really tells you until you experience them yourself.
Here are 7 things I wish someone told me before I moved to the U.S.:
1️⃣ Don’t choose a state just because it’s popular.
New York, California, and some big cities look glamorous online, but the cost of living can shock you. Rent, taxes, and daily expenses can swallow most of your income if you’re not prepared.
2️⃣ Start job hunting before you land.
Applying for jobs ahead of time can save you months of stress. Having interviews lined up gives you direction instead of arriving and wondering where to start.
3️⃣ Your credit score will follow you everywhere.
In America, credit matters for renting apartments, buying cars, and sometimes even getting a phone plan. Learn how to build good credit early and avoid mistakes that can haunt you later.
4️⃣ Healthcare is very expensive.
One hospital visit without insurance can cost thousands of dollars. Always understand your health insurance options before you actually need it.
5️⃣ In many cities, life without a car is difficult.
Outside a few major cities, public transportation is limited. Owning a car often becomes a necessity, not a luxury.
6️⃣ Opportunity is real ;but it won’t chase you.
America rewards people who take initiative. You may need to start small, learn new skills, network, and stay consistent before things begin to open up.
7️⃣ Be careful with credit cards and “easy money.”
Many newcomers fall into debt simply because no one explained how interest rates and minimum payments really work.
Moving abroad can change your life but the more informed you are, the smoother your journey will be.
If you're planning to move to the U.S. or you just arrived, save this for later.
And if you already live here…
