Reparations Is Not Just About Money: A Call to Reimagine Justice
#ReparationsFriday | June 26, 2025
When the call for reparations to Africans and people of African descent is raised in global forums, parliaments, classrooms, in communities or on the streets, it is often met with a single, simplified response: “What is the estimated cost? How much money are we getting?”
This reductionist view misses the core of what reparations actually mean to those who have endured centuries of deliberate and coordinated harm. Reparations is not merely a transactional settlement. It is a deeply transformational process; one that must confront and repair the Historical, Spiritual, Cultural, Economic, and Psychological wounds inflicted by slavery and slave trade, colonialism, apartheid, and their modern-day manifestations.
Reparations must include:
1. Land and sovereignty
2. Historical and educational justice
3. Language and cultural revival
4. Healing and memorialization
5. Cultural and spiritual restoration
6. Structural reforms
7. Financial compensation
Reparations is not aid. It is not pity. It is justice owed.
This Reparations Thursday we ask:
1. What does reparations look like for YOU?
2. How do you envision repair?
3. What stories do your people carry that the world must hear?
Share your reflections using the hashtag
#ReparationsFriday.
Justice is not a favour. Reparations is not optional. The time to repair is now.
