In recognition of World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day, we’re highlighting groundbreaking research aimed at better understanding and treating ankylosing spondylitis (AS). With support from the Foundation’s Innovative Research Award, Dr. James Rosenbaum worked to uncover the underlying causes of ankylosing spondylitis and develop new treatments. He was particularly interested in how the microbiome may play a role in the disease’s development. 🔬 Inside the Lab 🔬 There simply aren’t enough pediatric rheumatologists in the U.S., leaving families driving hours for specialized care — a gap that’s expected to grow over the next 20 years. With support from a Clinician Scholar Educator Award from the Rheumatology Research Foundation, Dr. Jay Mehta explored why trainees choose pediatric rheumatology and how we can better recruit and retain this vital workforce. By listening to fellows and residents, his research aimed to improve mentorship, training and support throughout the career pipeline.
