What will be your legacy?
This is our Q to members of the Citizen Participation & Public Petitions Committee ahead of their next consideration of our petition (date tbc).
For 3 long years,
#PE1979 has been in the petitions system and petitioners have raised serious allegations about mishandled child abuse &
#safeguarding concerns by public bodies - with links across cases.
Still today,
#whistleblowers (in their broadest sense) and
#survivors continue to come to us for support and to help their voices be better heard.
The committee have supported an independent national whistleblowing office for education and children's services but the SG have been defensive in response to their cross-party recommendation. On 8th October, the Cttee decided to again write to them.
The decision to be made is whether PE1979 - and its calls to better keep children safe - should be a legacy petition for the new 2026 parliament. Or, if it will be back to the drawing board with a fresh petition.
Whilst petitioners are frustrated at the already lengthy process, we need the committee &
#MSPs across the parliament to build on the progress, the growing support and to better hold the SG to account for realising the petition's calls.
Help us to address the power imbalances and prevent public bodies marking more of their own and their multi-agency partner's homework. Help us through independent investigation and an INWO to better establish the safeguarding truth and ensure systems and personnel that best keep our children safe.
We encourage more MSPs to get in touch and are here for any whistleblowers or survivors.
