Access to books and stories in South African Sign Language (SASL) is a human right. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, communicate and experience the joy of stories in a language they fully understand.
For Deaf children, South African Sign Language opens the door to literacy, learning and meaningful participation in society. When stories are shared in SASL, children are able to connect with language, express themselves and build confidence in their identities.
As Human Rights Month has come to an end, we are reminded that language rights are fundamental human rights. The recognition of South African Sign Language as an official language in South Africa affirms the rights of Deaf children and adults to access education, information and storytelling in their own language.
At Nal’ibali, we believe every child has the right to language, stories and the joy of reading. Because when we make space for sign language and all languages, we make space for every child to belong, to be heard and to thrive.
