Access to books and stories in South African Sign Language (SASL) is a human right. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, communicate and experience the joy of stories in a language they fully understand. For Deaf children, South African Sign Language opens the door to literacy, learning and meaningful participation in society. When stories are shared in SASL, children are able to connect with language, express themselves and build confidence in their identities. As Human Rights Month has come to an end, we are reminded that language rights are fundamental human rights. The recognition of South African Sign Language as an official language in South Africa affirms the rights of Deaf children and adults to access education, information and storytelling in their own language. At Nal’ibali, we believe every child has the right to language, stories and the joy of reading. Because when we make space for sign language and all languages, we make space for every child to belong, to be heard and to thrive. #LanguageRights #RightToLanguage #SouthAfricanSignLanguage #DeafRights #InclusiveEducation #Nalibali #LiteracyMatters

In the most innovative literacy initiative during National Literacy Month, Nal'ibali put together a meaningful educational exchange between two Cape Town ECDs. The event brought together students from the Engedi Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Mitchell's Plain and pre-schoolers from The Dominican School for the Deaf, fostering an environment of mutual understanding and learning. The event, which had more than 40 children, served multiple educational purposes. Students experienced firsthand how their peers from different backgrounds communicate, learn, and engage with their educators. The hearing children gained exposure to sign language, while the deaf students shared their unique methods of expression and learning. The day's activities centered around promoting literacy through interactive reading sessions, demonstrating that the love of stories transcends traditional language barriers. Following the educational activities, the children came together for a shared lunch period and recreational time. This social interaction proved invaluable, as it allowed the young participants to forge connections beyond their usual social circles and develop a deeper appreciation for different forms of communication. The success of this event showcases the importance of exposing children to diverse learning environments early in their educational journey. #LiteracyMonth #literacymonth2025 #africanstories #education #SASL #signlanguage #SouthAfricanSignLanguage

In the spirit of inclusivity and linguistic celebration, our Nal'ibali Eastern Cape recently added South African Sign Language (SASL) to their holiday reading programme at Dimbaza Library. Children participate in spelling bees and share stories in SASL using materials from the library. By incorporating SASL, the programme promotes understanding and appreciation of diverse linguistic backgrounds, enriching the overall experience for all participants. Through the promotion of literacy in South African Sign Language, Nal'ibali is raising awareness about the importance of sign languages in literacy development and the inclusion of deaf children in literacy programmes.
