$SC - (warning: long post)
I wasn’t an early holder of Shark Cat. In fact, if I am really honest I was a slightly concerned WIF holder who wasn’t sure whether this was just a quick attention grab riding on the back of the dog’s name and community. And, dare I say, that had some truth to it in the early days at the peak of March’s mania.
However, something won me over - from the OG image (which is uniquely cute), the memes and the culture that started to form. That’s what S-Tier memes do (not necessarily to be confused with S-Tier price action 😅) - they inspire creativity and cult-ure formation. So I became a holder a rode what has been the most bitter-sweet ride of the cycle for me.
I’d never done any meme content, never mind video less than a year ago, but I’ve learnt a few things - particularly around the creative process - and there is something you cannot force about making content, especially funny and authentic content - the wave of inspiration just comes when it wants to, and it is if you are channelling something that wants to be born. Cult labour, as we say in the SPX community, is almost exclusively powered by this. (I’ve never been paid a cent to create SC dubs btw.)
For whatever reason Shark Cat is truly special in that regards to my dubs - and if I had to make list of my top dubs, probably SC dubs would be at least 2 of the top 5 both in terms of my personal favourites and in terms of engagement/views. And you see it in the community - so many memes have that extra something - art even - and that quality is very rare and unique to just a handful of coins.
Yes, this was once “hot flavor of the week meme” - the first massive pumpfun runner - but whatever anyone may have said back then, few communities have been through more - and now after 10 months and a very long, painful but perhaps necessary karmic purification process this is truly a cult coin and now ticks all the boxes in Murad’s thesis.
Like many others I feel that we’ve reached a saturation point in this cycle for new coins and I don’t believe there is enough time in this cycle for deep cult-ure to form around anything that has been around less than 3 months - either you hijack something preexisting from outside of crypto or you need to start looking for undervalued communities with huge upside potential. Part of this shift is to those that have a “unique vibe” - and that is even more important in animal coin meta - where “cute” is no longer enough - if it ever was.
I think there are less than 5 cat meme coins (don’t get confused with non-meme cat coins) that have a unique vibe and community - actually, the only three that have ever stood out to me are Popcat, Michi and Shark Cat and honorable mention to Mini and Nub. (For all those screaming Mog - I don’t consider it to be a Cat coin - nobody became attracted to Mog because it is a cat - but that’s conversation for another day.)
Yes, I’m completely married to my SC bags and biased (don’t worry about me, plenty of massive wins for me elsewhere this cycle), but just in the same way that SPX and other coins win you over once you become a holder and have some kind of energetic ineffable force behind it - the same is true (at least for me) with SC.
Sub 10M mcap, IP rights with one of the world’s most famous cat’s, Netflix appearance to come, Ride or Die community and now multi-chain (Solana and Base). Surely this is better than throwing your sats, eth and sol into some unknown “new thing”? I think so - an asymmetrical bet if there was ever one - I've bought a lot more at these levels. To quote another classic SC Dub “Right now you can buy a $1 for less than 10 cent.” - 1 cent even ;-)
So could this yet be one of the comeback stories of the cycle? In this “industry”, I honestly don’t know - the odds here are often against the good guys - but it would truly be one of the most entertaining and wholesome of all time.
