Innovation for a Peaceful Future: A Night of Collaboration at the AUDA-NEPAD Gala
On February 12th, a powerful message of unity and progress echoed through the Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa. Her Excellency Ms. Maria JosĂ© Samba Ovono Obono, the African Unionâs Special Representative to Chad, joined a prestigious gathering of leaders and innovators for a high-level gala dinner. This event, a cornerstone of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Week, brought together influential figures like the Deputy President of the Gambia, former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, and a host of ministers, ambassadors, and young innovators.
The evening was more than just a celebration; it was a testament to the growing understanding that science and technology are not just engines of economic growth, but also crucial pillars of peace and security. The discussions highlighted a pivotal shift in perspective: that innovation, in all its forms, can empower local communities and foster a more responsible and engaged citizenry.
This is the driving force behind the fifth phase of the African Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (ASTII) initiative. By focusing on organizational change and empowering the youth, the program aims to harness the transformative power of peaceful elections for sustainable development.
In a significant step forward, our STI Office, in partnership with Lund University, is collaborating with the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This consortium will work to extend the benefits of innovation to non-profit institutions and the government sector.
The future is bright, with training sessions based on the internationally recognized Oslo Manual planned for Chad, Madagascar, and many other nations. This will equip them with the tools to collect and analyze innovation data, paving the way for evidence-based policies and a more prosperous, peaceful Africa.
