The Book of Piv Tour – Bunny’s Lunch Stop Edition
The Book of Piv tour rolled on today with lunch at one of my all-time favorite spots—Bunny’s, a legendary hangout for many Minneapolis Southwest alums. I shared a bowl of chili with one of the oldest (and most loyal) Pivs pals around—John Wahl, who just turned a young 93!
John told me he only gave up playing softball last year, but still plays volleyball. “Not very well,” he joked. A proud St. Thomas Tommie, John and his amazing family are featured in my memoir.
I had the privilege of coaching John’s son Tim Wahl at Mankato State. My brother Tom was Tim’s point guard back at our alma mater, Minneapolis Southwest High School. Tim’s sisters—Kathy, Tracy, and Liz—ran track for the Indians from 1976 to 1978 alongside my wife, the great Mary Louis (Hubbell) Pivec.
The next generation is still going strong: Tim’s son, Tyler Wahl, a standout at the University of Wisconsin, is now playing professional basketball in Poland.
Also at the table today:
Joe Wahl, the organizer and a talented SW guard back in the day
Greg “Pene” Hannon, my favorite teammate of all time (I gave him that nickname—story almost made the book... wink wink)
Ron “Gator” Gates, the best assistant coach a head coach could ever ask for
It was a great pre-Christmas get-together—good food, better friends, and plenty of (somewhat) embellished stories. So grateful for these memories and the people behind them.
