Plan by federal government to reduce electricity tariffs by Rs 8 per unit gets shotA plan by the federal governemnt to reduce electricity tariffs by Rs 8 per unit, as a relief to citizens, was shot down by the IMF which is currently engaged in a review of Pakistan's economic performance as part of its biannual review of Pakistan's $7 billion extended fund facility.
The reason for the disapproval by the IMF would presumably be linked to the fact that any such reduction in the electricity tariff would be seen as a subsidy to consumers - and the IMF's programme seeks to phase out government subsidies.
The plan was for the Prime Minister to announce the tariffs reduction in his March 23 Pakistan Day speech.
