In 2000, the United States Congress finally recognized the invaluable contributions of the Navajo Code Talkers by passing legislation to honor their legacy. Since then, every year on August 14th, we celebrate Navajo Code Talkers Day. A day dedicated to paying tribute to these extraordinary Diné warriors who played a crucial role in the World War II effort. Their unparalleled skills and the use of our sacred Diné language created an unbreakable code that was instrumental in securing victory for the Allied forces. This day is a powerful reminder of their immense impact on U.S. military history and the pivotal role our language played in safeguarding freedom.
As we reflect on their bravery and commitment, we must ensure that their legacy is forever cherished and passed down to future generations. I had the profound honor of meeting the late Sgt. Major Dan Akee (1919-2016), one of the 400 Navajo Code Talkers who was awarded the Congressional Silver Medal in 1988 by President George H. Bush for his heroic service.
I also had the privilege of meeting Peter MacDonald, who, before serving as Chairman of the Navajo Nation (1971-1983, 1987-1991), enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 15. Selected for the top-secret Navajo Code School, MacDonald served with distinction during WWII from 1944 to 1946.
I am deeply honored to have met these remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on history. Let us continue to honor their bravery and ensure that their legacy lives on, not just on this special day, but every day.
