No, not for a job😂.
I want to bring something to your notice.
Now, I’m not your English lecturer, but these things are needed😂.
I was having a conversation with my legend @anyasormichael. I knew he was sick, so I asked after him. He responded, and the next thing I said was “rest well.”
Then the alarm 🚨 went off! “Eliza, did you just say he should rest well?” Then, like he read my mind, he said **“rest well?”*😂. We laughed about it, and I admitted it was a mistake. And yea, I thought of it too.
I’m sure the majority of us make some word mistakes, so I’ll point some out.
➜ Rest well – This sounds like “rest in peace” when used for a sick person. “Get well soon” or “wishing you a speedy recovery” is better.
➜ Mutuals – People say “mutuals” when they mean “active mutuals.” Just because you follow each other doesn’t mean they interact with you.
➜ Condolences – Some people say “condolences” for any sad situation, but it’s best reserved for when someone has passed away.
➜ Good luck – Telling someone “good luck” before surgery might sound odd, like the outcome depends on luck. “Wishing you a smooth recovery” works better.
➜ Gentle reminder – Sometimes, it’s not really gentle; it’s a firm push. “Quick reminder” or “friendly reminder” might fit better.
➜ Literally – Used for exaggeration when something isn’t literal. (“I literally died laughing.” No, you didn’t😹.)
These are some of the words not all😂, but I will dish this for now.
I know English can be tricky, but let’s not make it trickier😂. What’s a word you’ve misused before?
