We were excited to welcome Sam Goodwin ’07 back to Spartan Country to speak with students in our Entrepreneurship Program.
A De Smet Jesuit alumnus, entrepreneur, author, and international speaker, Sam has traveled to all 193 countries in the world and is the only American civilian released from captivity by the Assad regime after spending 27 days as a Syrian hostage. He shared his incredible story—featured in his book Saving Sam—and challenged our Spartans to see adversity and uncertainty as opportunities for growth.
Sam talked about winning through adversity and shared that he believes the three most important attributes for entrepreneurs are flexibility, creativity, and resourcefulness. He reminded students that curiosity fuels innovation and to recognize uncertainty as an opportunity.
Sam shared these profound take aways garnered through his travels and captivity - Those with the least often give the most. We should never judge people by the actions of their government. You are never alone, God is always present.
Sam, thank you for inspiring the next generation of Spartans to think bigger, lead bravely, and take risks while still being Men for Others. A.M.D.G.
