An estimated 10 million dogs are slaughtered annually in China for human consumption. While the dog meat trade remains active, it faces intense domestic opposition, evolving government classifications, and localized legal bans.
The majority of dogs entering the trade are not farmed. Instead, they are stolen pets or captured strays grabbed off urban and rural streets by organized trafficking networks.Animal welfare activists have unveiled horrific images which lift the lid on the cruelty taking place inside so many dog slaughterhouses in China – during which animals face mind-bending levels of brutality including being blowtorched to death in the belief the technique makes for more tender dog steaks.
