Are we hiring Professors or Sales Agents? Itβs time for a Policy Shift in Indian Higher Education. π
π«In many colleges across India today, a faculty memberβs performance isn't being measured by their research or their teachingit's being measured by their admission targets. We are witnessing a systemic crisis where PhD holders are forced into tele-calling and marketing duties. This isn't just "extra work"; it is the "de-professionalization" of the teaching community.
The Reality Check:
β Faculty Burnout: When teachers are treated as marketing personnel, their passion for information development dies.
β Institutional Stagnation: A college that prioritizes admission counts over academic quality will never achieve long-term growth.
β The Suffering: Majority of faculties in every department are suffering due to this pressure, leading to high turnover and low morale.
My Appeal to College Management & Policy Makers:For genuine Institutional Development, we must move toward faculty-centric policies:
1οΈβ£ Separate Admissions from Academics: Let marketing experts handle sales. Let teachers handle the classroom.
2οΈβ£ Incentivize Research, not Enrollment: Reward publications and innovation, not just student headcounts.
3οΈβ£ Invest in Faculty Growth: A teacher who is growing intellectually is the best advertisement a college can have.
If we want to build world-class institutions in India, we must stop sacrificing academic dignity for short-term enrollment numbers.
Institutional development happens through teacher development, not just admission development.Agree or Disagree?
Iβd love to hear from my fellow educators and management professionals in the comments. π
