âItâs just a theoryâ. A scientific theory is not a postulate or a guess. A scientific theory is a body of knowledge supported by a preponderance of evidence that encompasses and explains facts, hypotheses, and natural laws. A scientific theory is the highest level of confidence that science can achieve. A few examples of a scientific theory are atomic theory, germ theory, theory of evolution, and the theory of relativity.
It is not a guess that atoms exist. We know they exist and how they behave. The theory of relativity has been demonstrated to be correct. The theory of evolution is supported by a preponderance of evidence from population genetics, phylogeny, paleontology, the fossil record, and geology. Evolution is still observable today, though creationists like to refer to it as âmicroevolutionâ. Germ theory is directly supported by the observation of bacteria and viruses via microscopes.
