I was a little surprised to read that actually. I didn't show up until 2012, so I don't have intimate knowledge of what happened. I do remember the reddit threads though. I spent most of my time trying to keep the Linux CGMiner/BFGminer working. Later, ASICs heating the houseπ

Although Fairbrix claims that it was originally created by Lee, Tenebrix was the precursor to Litecoin. It existed between BTC and later LTC. The issue was that the creator of Tenebrix had this massive pre-mine that people objected to, so it flopped.

Some are extremely niche. I was surprised by the sheer numer of them though - even more than what I've learned from @84Mpodcast with @ScryptWallet.
