🤖 Interested in Understanding AI?? 🤖 Last weeks #SecDataOps stream, Jax Scott gave a masterclass on understanding AI at a fundamental level to begin to perform audits and assessments. Additionally, in her true SUPERSTAR 🤩 fashion, she has made 100% of her research AVAILABLE for FREE!! ⬇️ Show some love for 🔥 Jax Scott🔥 in the comments!!! You can find her research material here: cyberinsecurity.tv/ai-auditi… This is all the data she used to build her course, Auditing Artificial Intelligence, with ACI Learning. I'm working closely with the team at ACI (thanks Jennifer Kelley!!) to see if we can't get some giveaways of the course!! ⬇️ Show ACI how much it would mean to them if they gave away some material to the Cyber Insecurity community!!!). In HYPE Monday fashion, I'd like to give an AMAZING shout out to Rachael Skillman and her team Skill-Dev for their work on the Cyber Insecurity website rebrand!! Her team was instrumental in modernizing it from something that Christopher Frazier and I put together in a weekend (or 2) to this awesome piece of art!! Make sure you check out their work on the Resume Rubric and do your self assessment ahead of any interview or job hunting you're doing!! We have a lot going on stream-wise. 🥊 The Brutal Truth About Tech Layoffs in 2024: Stay Ahead or Get Left Behind 🥊 🚨 Brace Yourself: The Tech Layoffs of 2024 Are Here, and They're Brutal 🚨 🩸- The tech industry is bleeding talent. The recent wave of layoffs isn't just another cycle; it's a wake-up call. This year alone, we've seen big names like Meta, Amazon, and Google cut thousands of jobs. What's driving this frenzy? It's not just poor performance—it's the ruthless reality of a high-interest economy. ❓ - Here's why: 1️⃣ - Economic Headwinds: With rising interest rates and inflation fears, companies are slashing costs to keep investors happy. Higher borrowing costs mean less money to fuel growth, and job cuts become a quick fix. 2️⃣ - Overexpansion: Many companies expanded rapidly during the pandemic, banking on continued digital demand. As markets normalize, they're left with bloated teams and unsustainable burn rates. 3️⃣ - Market Valuation Adjustments: The days of soaring tech valuations are over. Companies are recalibrating to more realistic metrics, and unfortunately, jobs are often the first casualty. Stay Resilient: Secure Your Spot in the Tech World 1️⃣ - Continuously Upskill: Never stop learning. Whether it's a new programming language, cybersecurity skills, or project management, being versatile is your shield against obsolescence. 2️⃣ - Network Relentlessly: Connect with peers, mentors, and industry leaders. A strong network can be your safety net, offering support and opportunities when you need them most. 3️⃣ - Demonstrate Value: Be proactive in showcasing how your work contributes to the bottom line. Take on projects that align with company goals and make your impact visible. If You're Laid Off: Turn Setbacks Into Comebacks 1️⃣ - Reflect and Recharge: Use this time to assess your career goals. What skills do you want to develop? What kind of work culture suits you best? 2️⃣ - Expand Your Horizons: Consider freelance, contract work, or consulting roles. They can offer new experiences and bridge the gap until you find your next full-time role. 3️⃣ - Invest in Yourself: Whether it’s taking a course, attending workshops, or reading extensively, focus on personal growth to emerge stronger and more marketable. The tech landscape is volatile, but with the right mindset and strategy, you can weather any storm. Remember, resilience isn't just about bouncing back—it's about bouncing forward. Stay sharp, stay connected, and keep pushing the boundaries. 🔗 Read the full article: lnkd.in/eCZQSRuH In #streaming news this week, we have two AMAZING guests in Thursdays #SecDataOps cast and Fridays Tea w/a Hacker on the Cyber Insecurity channels! Make sure you have those notifications on and are turned in!! More info coming later this week! #TechLayoffs #CareerResilience #EconomicTrends #TechIndustry #StayAhead

💥 Data Management Fk-Ups: Lessons Learned and SecDataOps Revelations 💥 Reflecting on a candid conversation with 🔹John Moore this morning, it's clear that data management is more than just a checkbox—it's a damn necessity. Here’s what John had to say about his journey and the hard-won lessons that every #security professional should heed. John's Data Management Epiphanies: 1️⃣ - Appreciate the Data Problem: Ignoring data issues is like playing Russian roulette. John realized, albeit late, that understanding the depth of data problems is crucial. Don’t wait until it bites you in the ass. 2️⃣ - Identify Sensitive Information Early: This isn't rocket science, folks. John admitted that better identification of sensitive data could’ve saved a lot of headaches. Know what’s sensitive and treat it like gold. 3️⃣ - Implement Robust Controls: It's not just about knowing what’s sensitive; it’s about protecting it fiercely. John learned that the right controls make the difference between a minor hiccup and a catastrophic breach. Top 3 Data Management Best Practices: 🧠 - Know Your Data Inside Out: You can’t protect what you don’t understand. Regularly audit and classify your data. Use tools that give you clear visibility into your data landscape. 🤖 - Automate Your Security Controls: Manual processes are for chumps. 🚧 - Automate access controls, encryption, and monitoring to ensure consistent protection without the human error factor. Continuously Monitor and Improve: Data management isn’t set-and-forget. Continuously monitor for new vulnerabilities and adapt your controls. Learn from every incident and evolve your practices. SecDataOps: The Parallel Universe 🤝 - Integrated Approach: Just like John learned to appreciate the interconnectedness of data issues, SecDataOps breaks down silos between security, data, and operations teams. It’s about holistic management where everyone’s on the same page. ⏳ - Proactive Measures: John’s hindsight is SecDataOps’ foresight. Proactive monitoring, real-time data analysis, and predictive measures ensure you’re ahead of the curve, not playing catch-up after a breach. In a nutshell, managing data is like taming a beast—ignore it at your peril. 🗺️ - John's journey underscores the critical need for an integrated, proactive approach to data management, mirroring the core principles of SecDataOps. Don’t wait for hindsight to kick in. Act now, and keep your data beast in check. Make sure to tune in, like, subscribe and turn on notification for Cyber Insecurity channels for our next conversation! #DataManagement #SecDataOps #CyberSecurity #DataProtection #ProactiveSecurity #ContinuousImprovement

🔥 CISOs, Get Off Your High Horse and Get Technical!🔥 There has always been this awkward back-and-forth of how technical a #CISO needs to be - and what good it brings to the table. I have had the privilege of working for both and def have my own opinions that have shaped my hashtag#career path. I had a great conversation with ALS CISO, 🔹John Moore - great friend and colleague and got his take on it as well. This has sparked controversy in the past in the #cyber community and decided to bring other opinions to the conversation table. Comment below on your take on John's benefits of being technically minded as a CISO! ⬇️ Have you ever wondered how a CISO can still keep their hands on the keyboard amidst their countless responsibilities? 🤯 The truth is, many don't, and it shows! 🔍 Here's what I discovered from my journey as a hands-on CISO: 📚 - Continuous Learning is Key: Balancing technical and tactical knowledge with managerial duties is tough. I make it work by diving into personal projects, like experimenting with AI and data sets, to stay sharp and informed. 🛠️ - Technical Acumen Sets You Apart: Most CISOs aren't deeply technical. When I engage in sales calls or board meetings, my technical insight allows me to cut through the smoke and mirrors. This isn't just impressive—it’s essential for making informed decisions. 💸 - Bridge the Gap Between IT and Business: We often talk about "IT vs. the business," but this mindset is flawed. Both sides need to understand each other better. Technical CISOs should also be business-savvy, and business leaders need a grasp of technology. The lesson here? Increasing data visibility and embracing #SecDataOps can massively enhance your effectiveness and credibility as a CISO. This integrated approach not only improves incident response but also fosters better collaboration across the board. Being a CISO isn't just about strategy—it's about staying in the trenches and understanding the tech that drives your business. Stay informed, stay engaged, and never lose touch with the tactical side! Dont forget to tune in tomorrow at 3pm EST for my chat with another great security leader, 🔥 Jax Scott🔥 as we talk about the global state of cyber security on the Cyber Insecurity channels and here on LinkedIn! #CyberSecurity #CISO #SecDataOps #DataVisibility #TechLeadership #StayIn

🙈 Holy Sh*t! You Won't Believe the True Scope of Cyber Incidents Until You're Neck-Deep in One! 🙈 Have you ever wondered just how deep the rabbit hole goes when it comes to cyber incidents? The truth is, until you're in the thick of it, you have no idea how expansive the blast radius can be. 🤯 🔍 Here's what ALS CISO 🔹John Moore learned from conducting 72 forensic investigations in just one year: 🤨 - Expect the Unexpected: From criminal activities to child exploitation and federal grand jury cases, the variety of incidents you might face is staggering. Each case can lead you down a new, unforeseen path. ⚡️ - Public Wi-Fi Networks Are a Double-Edged Sword: Our visibility into public networks meant we had to be prepared for anything and everything. The breadth of potential incidents on these networks was truly eye-opening. 🔭 - Scope Creep is Real and Relentless: The initial scope of an investigation can expand dramatically, revealing layers of complexity that you never anticipated. So, how do you manage this chaos and improve your incident response? ⬇️ - Comment below on your best practices for managing the chaos! ⬇️ The key is increasing data visibility and embracing #SecDataOps. By integrating security operations with data operations, you gain a more comprehensive view of your network, enabling faster and more effective responses to incidents. Tune in Thursday at 3pm EST on the Cyber Insecurity channels as I bring my good friend 🔥 Jax Scott🔥 on the show to talk about the state of Global Cyber Security - From Election Security to Business tactics. In the world of cybersecurity, being proactive is non-negotiable. Stay prepared, stay vigilant, and never underestimate the blast radius of an incident! #CyberSecurity #IncidentResponse #SecDataOps #DataVisibility #ForensicInvestigation #StayPrepared

👀 Visibility in a Cyber Incident Investigation is Harder than you Think 👀 Having a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system in place is a critical step in building a robust #cybersecurity strategy. However, it's a common misconception that a #SIEM alone guarantees full visibility during a hashtag#cyber incident investigation. Don't take my word for it - 🔹John Moore, CISO at ALS has LIVED that! 🎣  Example: Investigating Phishing Incidents Imagine you receive a phishing alert. Your SIEM captures some data, but critical pieces might be missing: 📧 - Email Logs: SIEM might not capture detailed email logs, leaving gaps in understanding the phishing email's origin and spread. 🖥️ - Endpoint Data: Without integration with endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools, you might miss how the phishing attempt affects individual devices. 🚧 - Network Traffic: Network anomalies might go unnoticed if your SIEM isn't pulling comprehensive network traffic data. 🔎 Top 3 Reasons SIEMs Aren't as Effective at Cyber Investigations as they used to be: Data Silos: Many SIEMs struggle to integrate all relevant data sources, especially in todays complex multi-cloud landscapes, leading to incomplete views. Volume Overload: The sheer volume of logs can overwhelm SIEMs, causing important alerts to be buried and fiscal constraints to drastically limit usefulness. Contextual Gaps: SIEMs often lack the context needed to correlate events across different systems effectively. Examples of this are predominantly seen in Microsoft EntraID and hashtag#threatintel data. 💡 Federated Search: A new approach? Federated Search can address these deficiencies by allowing security teams to query multiple data sources simultaneously, providing a more comprehensive view of the incident landscape. It breaks down silos, enhances data correlation, and improves the efficiency of investigations. Dont' forget to tune into a NEW episode of #SecDataOps live #stream this Thursday at 3pm EST on the Cyber Insecurity channels!! I'll be joined by my special guest Jax (oh snap - SURPRISE!!). #CyberSecurity #SIEM #FederatedSearch #Phishing #IncidentResponse #Sec
