As we celebrate the JUNO Awards, we’re reflecting on the lasting impact of Secret Path. At the 2017 JUNO Awards, Gord Downie was recognized with Songwriter of the Year and Adult Alternative Album of the Year for Secret Path, an album that tells the story of Chanie Wenjack and honours the 150,000 children who were taken from their families and forced to attend residential schools. Gord used his acceptance speech to remind us of the work that needs to be done to repair the relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada - words that remain true today. This year, on the 10th anniversary of Secret Path, over 250,000 students in 7,400 classrooms throughout the country are engaging with Chanie’s story and turning education into meaningful action.
