The late Fana Khaba 34🕊️🕊️known as Khabzela, was a legendary DJ and radio personality who transformed youth culture and mainstream broadcasting during his time at YFM, Gauteng’s leading youth radio station. A former taxi driver from Soweto his genuine style, strong ties to township life, and passion for kwaito music elevated him to iconic status in the media landscape. He died from AIDS related complications on the 4 January 2004. Born and raised in Soweto, Khaba transitioned from driving taxis to a career in radio. In a landmark moment in April 2003, he publicly revealed his HIV positive status during his breakfast show, helping to humanize the disease at a time when stigma and denialism were rampant across South Africa. Although he briefly began antiretroviral therapy (ART), he later discontinued it after being influenced by traditional healers. He passed away at the age of 34 in Johannesburg General Hospital in early 2004. His story and the cultural complexities around his health decisions are vividly captured by the Author Liz McGregor’s bestselling 2005 biography, Khabzela: The Life and Times of a South African.
