🏈⚾🏐 Who is most at risk for shoulder instability? Young athletes in contact sports like football, wrestling, and rugby are at the highest risk, especially after a first-time dislocation. The younger the athlete, the greater the risk of recurrence. Overhead athletes such as baseball players, volleyball players, and swimmers can develop instability from repetitive stress rather than a single injury. Patients with naturally loose joints (hyperlaxity) may also develop multidirectional instability, even without a major traumatic event. The cause and type of instability matter because treatment should be individualized to the athlete and their goals. #ShoulderInstability #SportsMedicine #ShoulderDislocation #Orthopedics

🔥 MCQ of the Day | Ortho Emergency Pearl 🔥 🧠 A 35-year-old woman with posterior shoulder dislocation—what’s the most common association? A. Hypertension B. Type 2 Diabetes C. Stroke D. Seizure 💥 Answer: D. SEIZURE ⸻ 🎯 Why Seizure? 👉 Posterior shoulder dislocation is classically linked to seizures 👉 Due to powerful internal rotator muscle contraction during convulsions 👉 Also seen with ⚡ electric shock ⸻ ⚠️ Exam Buzzword: 🔁 “Posterior dislocation = Seizure / Electric shock” ⸻ 💡 Clinical Clues: 🔸 Arm held in adduction internal rotation 🔸 Limited external rotation (key finding 🔑) 🔸 Often missed on X-ray → require axillary/scapular Y view ⸻ 🚀 Take Home Message: 👉 If you see posterior shoulder dislocation → Think SEIZURE first! ⸻ #MedEd #NEETPG #PLAB #Orthopedics #EmergencyMedicine #ClinicalPearls #Seizure #ShoulderDislocation 💥🦴

Recurrent shoulder dislocations can cause bone loss in the humeral head or glenoid. Bone graft surgery restores the bony structure using an autograft or allograft, improving stability and reducing dislocation risk. medilink.us/0ubp #bonegraft #shoulderdislocation

📝 What should be documented for an anterior shoulder dislocation? A Delphi study This multicentre Delphi study asked: What should clinicians document after managing a shoulder dislocation in the ED? 📋 Of 85 proposed items, only 22 reached consensus. 🔍 93% showed wide variation—highlighting inconsistency in practice. Agreed essentials included: 🔹 Whether it's a first or recurrent dislocation 🔹 Side affected 🔹 Mechanism of injury 🔹 Sensory/motor changes 🔹 Neurovascular status after reduction 🔹 Sensation & motor function (axillary, radial, median, ulnar nerves) 🔹 Range of motion 🔹 Arm function post-reduction 🔹 Imaging type and side 🔹 Direction of dislocation 🔹 Post-reduction fracture assessment 🔹 Pain/sedation given and how 🔹 Reduction technique used 🔹 Whether technique was successful 🔹 Documentation of complications 🔹 Child safeguarding screen (if relevant) 📌 This sets the stage for standardising ED notes, improving communication, and enabling higher-quality research. 🔗 doi.org/10.1136/emermed-2024… #EmergencyMedicine #ShoulderDislocation #ClinicalDocumentation #HealthData #FOAMed #May2025 @RCollEM
