Summary on Roles of Sign Language Interpreters In **Nigeria**, sign language interpreters (often working with variants of Nigerian Sign Language) perform these same roles but face unique challenges and contexts. - However, the profession remains underserved: There is no official national certification or government recognition of sign language as an official language, leading to inconsistent availability, limited training pathways, and calls for better integration in sectors like health, education, media, and justice. - Freelance interpreters or those affiliated with NGOs often provide services, and efforts continue to expand their presence in public broadcasts and official proceedings for greater inclusion of the Deaf community. In conclusion, #SignLanguageInterpreters are essential professionals who empower Deaf individuals by removing communication barriers and fostering an inclusive society. In contexts like Nigeria, their work aligns with CRPD obligations and national disability laws, though stronger enforcement and professional recognition would enhance their impact. #DeafAwareness ✌️
Here it is - Common Settings Where They (Sign Language Interpreters) Work 🎯 - **Education** — Interpreting lectures, classes, discussions, and school events for deaf students. 🎯 - **Media and Public Broadcasts** — Providing interpretation for news, announcements, public functions, conferences, or TV programs (e.g., during live broadcasts or government addresses). 🎯 - **Government and Public Functions** — At official meetings, court proceedings, emergency alerts, or public gatherings to ensure inclusivity. 🎯 - **Healthcare and Mental Health** — Supporting consultations, therapy, or psychotherapy so deaf individuals can express emotions and receive accurate information. 🎯 - **Legal and Professional** — In courts, workplaces, conferences, or corporate settings. 🎯 - **Community and Social Services** — At events, social interactions, or NGO activities. #DeafAwareness Now ask yourself, if I am in the above-mentioned category, and I still struggle at communicating with a deaf person, what is your excuse 😅 #SignLanguage.

@RegisterISLI offers an example of how we have done this in Ireland for #SignLanguageInterpreters as a result of the #IrishSignLanguageAct - but we have EU Directives in place that call for registration of interpreters in legal contexts & should work to implement this.

We want to thank the Singapore Deaf community for their support. We are extremely grateful and hope that this will lead to more accessible concerts and shows in the future. 🤞 We would also like to acknowledge the contributions of Deaf artists Shariffah Faaiqah and Lily Goh @EOHorizons in the access for this Coldplay concert. ✨ Thank you to the other interpreters, Azzam Akbar and Fang Shawn. You guys are such amazing people to work with and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. ❤️ Thank you to @coldplay and Live Nation for this opportunity of a lifetime, providing access to Deaf communities worldwide. 🫶 #Coldplay #ColdplaySingapore #Inclusivity #Accessibility #Deaf #SignLanguageInterpreters #SignLanguage #SgSL

Attended the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) Conference 2023 and World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) 19th World Congress 2023 in Jeju, South Korea 🇰🇷! I've learnt so much from the countless presentations by speakers from all over the world on various topics, especially the insightful presentation on Interpreters Guilt in ASEAN countries, DeafBlind people in Korea, and sign language interpreting as a social institution by @mdemeulder 🤩 I got the privilege of meeting SO MANY amazingly talented people during this trip. 🎉 #WASLI2023 #WFD2023 #WASLI #WFD #Deaf #SignLanguage #SignLanguageInterpreters
