Cattle breeds around the world are recognized for their unique characteristics, including milk production, meat yield, reproductive performance, adaptability to climatic conditions, and overall productivity. Many countries are known for specific breeds that have gained international recognition and hold significant economic value for livestock producers.
The breeds featured in this illustration include some of the most renowned cattle breeds from different parts of the world, such as Angus from the United States, Nelore from Brazil, Shorthorn from the United Kingdom, Charolais from France, Wagyu from Japan, Gir from India, Hereford from Australia, Bonsmara from South Africa, Simmental from Germany, Brangus from Argentina, and Brahman from Thailand.
For Pakistan, it is a matter of great pride that the Sahiwal breed is recognized as the country's most famous dairy cattle breed. Sahiwal is widely regarded as one of the finest dairy Zebu breeds in the world. Originating from the Sahiwal region of Punjab, Pakistan, this breed has spread to many countries and has earned a strong reputation in the global dairy industry.
The Sahiwal breed is known for its high milk production, exceptional heat tolerance, strong disease resistance, efficient utilization of low-quality feed resources, and excellent reproductive performance. These qualities have led to its successful use in pure breeding and crossbreeding programs across Australia, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, and several other countries.
Another globally recognized dairy breed from Pakistan is the Red Sindhi, which originated in the Sindh province. The Red Sindhi is renowned for its high milk yield, remarkable tolerance to heat and humidity, resistance to diseases, and ability to perform efficiently under low-input production systems. The breed has been successfully introduced to countries such as Brazil, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Malaysia, and many others, where it has contributed significantly to dairy development.
Similarly, Japan's Wagyu breed is famous for producing highly marbled premium beef, the Angus breed of the United States is recognized for superior beef quality, France's Charolais is valued for rapid growth and muscular development, while India's Gir breed is internationally known for its excellent dairy potential.
Pakistan is also home to several other valuable indigenous breeds, including Cholistani, Tharparkar, Dhanni, and others. These breeds represent an important genetic resource for the country's livestock sector. Through conservation, breed registration, scientific breeding programs, and genetic improvement initiatives, Pakistan can further increase milk and meat production while creating new opportunities for the export of its indigenous livestock genetics.
Today, there is a growing need for government institutions, research organizations, and livestock farmers to work together for the conservation and improvement of native breeds. Such efforts will strengthen Pakistan's livestock sector and ensure that its indigenous breeds continue to maintain their unique identity and value on the global stage.
"Sahiwal and Red Sindhi are priceless genetic treasures of Pakistan and a source of pride for the entire nation."
