On this day in 2024, we flew Mission - 01, a fully controlled flight from a completely new location within Sriharikota, with our vehicle - Agnibaan SOrTeD. As we recollect this, we would like to take a moment to thank everyone - the Government, our investors, vendors, and our incredibly hardworking crew for coming together to make this happen. We also recognise that this Mission had a few "firsts". 🚀 World's first flight with a single-piece 3D-printed engine 🚀 India's first semi-cryogenic engine-powered flight 🚀 India's first flight powered by Linux OS and Ethernet architecture and more... We also remind ourselves that this was never a race though. This is about a very young team & their families, choosing to build completely new technology from India, for the world, and in that process help satellites get to orbit. Humbled to share that we successfully test fired 4 semi-cryogenic rocket engines simultaneously, as a cluster. All the 4 engines are 3d printed as single pieces of hardware - designed and manufactured in-house at AgniKul Cosmos Rocket Factory - 1. As with all our propulsion systems, these 4 engines are also powered by electric motor driven pumps. This test involved calibrating 8 pumps, 8 motors and tuning 8 speed control algorithms to work together in perfect sync to achieve uniform startup, steady state and shutdown performance across the entire system. As with the last cluster test, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such a test has been performed in India with semi cryogenic engines. Humbled to share this dual-engine firing video, where both of our in-house electric motor–driven, pump-fed, single-piece engines reached thermal steady state and demonstrated uniform system performance over 49 seconds. Deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to advance electric motor-driven, pump-fed 3D printed rocket engines in India through our homegrown technologies with ISRO & IN-SPACe support. Two updates - A) Humbled to introduce the world’s biggest single-piece 3D-printed inconel engine, a global first in both scale & complexity. It is an meter long engine entirely printed as a single component in one shot. (No welds, no joints, no fasteners from fuel entry to plume exit.) This milestone marks a breakthrough in additive manufacturing at this scale & comes as a major extension of our earlier accomplishment of making & flying the world's first single piece engine. Compared to our earlier upper stage engines, these are longer, more complex and massive. B) We have been granted a patent in the US for the design & manufacturing of single-piece rocket engines. Means something to have a completely Indian origin design patented in the US - a nation that has built some of the most complex engines in this industry. Exactly one year ago, on this very day, May 30, 2024, we flew a fully controlled launch vehicle. It was Mission 01 of Agnibaan SOrTeD. Today, we want to take a moment to sincerely thank everyone - the Dept. Of Space, @INSPACeIND , various @isro centers, customers, investors, advisors from ISRO, @iitmadras , @iitm_respark , @IITMIC, Dept. of Science and Technology @IndiaDST, TDB @tdbgoi, KSUM @startup_mission , Govt. of Tamil Nadu @Guidance_TN , Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, our vendors, suppliers and other mentors - that made this possible & remind ourselves that this is just one of the many missions we will accomplish. During this flight, SOrTeD achieved several important firsts: 1. World's First flight powered by a single-piece 3D printed engine 2. India’s first-ever semi-cryogenic engine launch 3. First ever launch from a private launchpad in India 4. First launch from India, driven by computers running on Linux 5. First launch from India using an Ethernet-based architecture for connecting flight computers within the vehicle 6. Humbled to announce the successful firing of India’s first electric motor-driven semi-cryogenic engine (video below). This video shows the engine being throttled across a wide range of thrusts by varying the speed of the electric motor. Electric motor-driven throttling allows for higher accuracy and rapid response - important features for handling complex trajectories. Also, regarding flight readiness, this test is a key milestone towards firing a cluster of engines together. Additionally, this system continues to use our signature single-piece engine that Agnikul has always used. Along with the patented engine, many subsystems of the pump were also 3D-printed and assembled at our AS9100D certified facility - Rocket Factory - 1.
