In March 2023, Australia became the first country to tailor sun exposure guidelines based on skin type, skin cancer risk, and vitamin D needs — a major step forward for personalized health!

Darker skin has more melanin, which naturally protects against sunburns and skin cancer — but also slows vitamin D production. That means someone with skin type VI may need over 10x more sun exposure than someone with lighter skin (type II) to make the same amount of vitamin D.
