REPEAT BREAK-IN ATTEMPT: SMALL BUSINESS HIT AGAIN IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD This is very alarming for our neighborhood. For the second time, this local convenience store had its front glass smashed. Last week, it reportedly happened again, and now the window has been damaged badly enough that it had to be covered and taped up. Thankfully, it appears the thief got nothing — but that does not erase the bigger problem. Small businesses should not have to keep paying for broken windows, lost time, fear, and damage while repeat incidents continue. This is not just one store’s problem. This is a community safety issue. We need stronger police visibility, more follow-up, and cooperation from nearby residents, building owners, and businesses with cameras. If anyone saw something or has CCTV footage, report it. Silence only helps the people doing this. For Montreal, SPVM says emergencies should go to 911, non-urgent matters should be handled through the local neighborhood police station, and anonymous tips can be sent to Info-Crime Montréal at 514-393-1133. But let’s be honest — the way these new tariffs are being rolled out is hurting the wrong people. Small and mid-size American businesses — the backbone of our economy — are being squeezed out of the market, while many Chinese sellers continue to operate freely, unchecked, and untaxed. --- Here’s the core issue: 1. We can’t just shift production overnight. Big corporations might have the power to relocate to the U.S. or Mexico. Most small brands don’t. Our supply chains were built over decades, and the U.S. doesn't have the infrastructure today to handle broad-scale, diversified manufacturing. We need time — not penalties. 2. Chinese sellers continue to dominate platforms — and avoid tariffs. They undercut prices, avoid taxes, abuse loopholes, and often break laws — IP theft, fake reviews, fraudulent listings — with no real consequences. And all the while, they don’t hire Americans, don’t pay income taxes, and don’t reinvest in our economy. --- Just look at the data (2024): Over 50% of Amazon’s top sellers are now Chinese-based. Temu controls 17% of U.S. discount market share. Most revenue from Amazon, Temu, Shein, and TikTok Shop is leaving the U.S. economy entirely. Meanwhile, thousands of American jobs and brands are disappearing. --- We need smarter solutions. Tariffs alone won’t fix this. Here’s what will: Require U.S.-based legal representatives for all foreign sellers to be held accountable for violations. Tax foreign sellers at higher rates for not being American-owned. Protect U.S. brand ownership and distribution while rebuilding manufacturing. Enforce real penalties for IP abuse, manipulation, and fraud.
