Soft Machine - Third
Nel giugno del 1970 i Soft Machine pubblicano per la CBS / Columbia il doppio lp Third, terzo disco della band inglese.
L'album si compone di quattro brani, uno per lato, ed è registrato dalla fomazione che comprende il tastierista Mike Ratledge, il batterista e cantante Robert Wyatt, il sassofonista Elton Dean e il bassista Hugh Hopper.
Con Third inizia a prevalere l’anima jazz rock o free jazz della band che abbandona in buona parte la psichedelia che aveva caratterizzato i precedenti lavori.
Facelift è una traccia registrata live (peraltro molto rielaborata in studio) in buona parte il 4 gennaio 1970 dalla formazione a cinque che comprende anche il sassofonista Lyn Dobson.
Alla registrazione del disco partecipano anche Jimmy Hastings (fratello di Pye Hastings dei Caravan) che suona flauto e clarinetto in Slightly All the Time, il violinista free-jazz Rab Spall (allora compagno di band di Wyatt nell'ensemble Amazing Band) che interviene nella coda di Moon in June, e Nick Evans (che era stato membro dei Soft Machine alla fine del 1969, quando per un breve periodo la band era composta di sette elementi) che suona il trombone in Slightly All the Time e Out-Bloody-Rageous.
Il disco è interamente strumentale fatta eccezione per la splendida Moon in June scritta (e in buona parte suonata) da Robert Wyatt, brano che stacca rispetto al respiro jazz del resto del disco e che sembra quasi fotografare la frattura in corso nella band tra Wyatt ed il resto del gruppo.
Malgrado sia un doppio e malgrado non sia un disco di ascolto immediato, commercialmente il lp funziona e raggiunge il numero 18 nelle classifiche del Regno Unito.
