Geologically, its surface features a photosphere with a granular texture caused by convection cells of hot plasma rising and cooling, visible as bright granules (about 1,000 km across) separated by darker lanes.
The image also shows solar prominences, large, bright loops of plasma extending from the surface, driven by the Sun's magnetic field, and subtle sunspots, cooler regions (around 3,500–4,500 K) indicating magnetic activity.
The Sun, composed of 74% hydrogen, 24% helium, and trace elements, has a diameter of about 1.39 million kilometers and an age of 4.6 billion years, currently in its stable hydrogen fusion phase.
